Are you looking for high-quality dog food for your furry friend?

Many dog foods are available, and new brands keep surfacing! So, whenever you go to your local pet store to pick up a bag of food for your furry friend, you’re intimidated by what you see on the shelves.

Choosing the best dog food for your faithful companion can take time.  You need to research what’s healthy, the ingredients, the ratio of ingredients used, etc., which can take a lot of time and energy.

To make things a bit easier for you, in this blog post, we will review the Acana Light and Fit dog food in detail to help you determine whether or not it is the right pick for your fluffy friend.

Let’s begin, shall we?

A Peek Through Time Acana Pet Food Company History

Acana Pet Food Company is a subsidiary of Champion Pet Foods, also credited as the creator of Orijen Pet Foods. This award-winning pet food maker has been one of the most popular pet food companies in the last 25 years. The company makes biologically appropriate foods for dogs and cats from regional ingredients.

The food is made from scratch at the company’s award-winning kitchens and meets stringent quality standards.  The company’s mission represents a new standard in dog and cat foods. The food has been specially designed to nourish pets in two ways.

  • According to their natural evolution to a meat-based diet
  • Use ingredients that are sustainably raised and harvested by local suppliers and delivered to our kitchens fresh or raw

Let’s see whether or not the Acana Light and Fit Dog Food is a good fit for your furry friend.

Company Values: Acana Pet Foods

One of the best things about the Acana Food Company is that it creates biologically appropriate foods for cats and dogs.

As you may know, modern dogs have the Gray Wolf as their ancestor—an animal that thrives on meat. While dogs have evolved and changed, their basic nutritional needs aren’t too different.

All the dog foods created by Acana are:

1.   Rich in Meat and Protein

One of the things that make Acana Pet Food the best choice for your dog is that it contains 75% meat which is excellent and almost unheard of in the pet food industry.

Dogs need a meat-rich diet to thrive because they’re carnivores by nature.

This dog food brand keeps that in mind.

2.   High in Fresh Meat

Another great thing about Acana Pet Food is the fact that it contains high levels of fresh meats. Up to half of the roots included in the dog food are new. This means they provide natural savory flavors and the goodness that dogs instinctively crave.

3.   Have a Variety of Meats

In the wild, dogs prey on several different types of meat. It can be boring to eat the same kind of meat all the time for dogs as they crave variety. Acana Dog Food features a diversity of free-run poultry, nest-laid eggs, free-range meats, and wild-caught fish.

4.   Have Wholeprey Ratios

When it comes to diet, it is best to mimic one that closely matches a dog’s natural one. Acana Pet Foods contains the correct ratios of meat, organs, and cartilage that mirror the raw diet.

This eliminates the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients.

5.   Have Plenty of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Finally, to meet your dog’s carbohydrate needs, Acana Pet Food contains fresh orchard-grown fruit and farm-fresh vegetables that provide fiber and antioxidants in natural form.

In-Depth Acana Light and Fit Dog Food Review

When we look at the Acana Light and Fit Dog food by just the quality of ingredients used to manufacture it, it is an above-average dog food because it contains high-quality ingredients.  However, there are other things, too, that we need to take a look at.

The dog food contains the following macronutrients:

  • 33% proteins, which is above-average
  • 19% fat which is above-average
  • 40% carbohydrates which are average

Dog food contains an average fat-to-protein ratio of 55%, which is good.  Another thing to look for is the content of meat in the food.  Even when you factor in the protein-boosting effects of plant sources such as beans, legumes, etc., this dog food contains a notable amount of meat which is excellent compared to other leading dog foods.

In summary, the Acana Light and Fit Dog food is a high-quality meat-based food that contains large amounts of named meats. The kibble is made of high-quality ingredients and doesn’t compromise on quality.

What We Think About Acana Light and Fit Dog Food

As you know, dogs evolved to be carnivores and thrive on a diet rich in animal-based proteins. Dogs need a diet rich in fresh meats and don’t need many vegetables, fruits, and legumes.

The Acana Heritage Light and Fit dog food contains premium animal ingredients, high-quality vegetables, fruits, botanicals, and essential vitamins and minerals.  This dog food doesn’t have cheap ingredients such as gluten, grain, potato, meat by-products, or plant protein concentrations.

This biologically appropriate dog food product contains whole prey superfoods such as poultry, organs, and cartilage. The ingredients are fresh and regionally sourced to ensure quality, and the food is made from scratch at the company’s award-winning kitchens.

This dog food is naturally palatable to dogs and contains freeze-dried infusions.

Summing Up: Acana Light and Fit Dog Food Review

I have a female collie who is almost 2 years old, she was spayed 3 months ago, the vet told me she was slightly heavy for a young collie at 26kg, and that she may increase in weight due to her being spayed, I have had her on Burns Weight Control since she was spayed, but someone told me about Acana being a much better food than the Burns, so I bought a 2kg bag of the Light & Fit and am at the moment transitioning her gradually to the Acana (which she really likes), do you consider this to be a good choice for her? or should I try one of the other foods in the Acana range?

      Trish,

It certainly sounds like you are doing everything right when it comes to you’re girl. Our advice would be to continue using this product since it sounds like your girl likes it and just see how things go. When dealing with “light and fit” dog food types sometimes just finding one that your dog enjoys is half the battle.

      Good luck,

      IndulgeYourPet
